How to Choose a Split Core Current Transformer for EV Charger Load Balancing

As electric vehicle charging becomes more common, accurate current monitoring plays an important role in dynamic load balancing, solar charging and energy management.

A split core current transformer (CT) measures AC current without disconnecting the existing conductor, making it suitable for EV charging installations and retrofit projects.

Jiangyin Spark Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. has manufactured current transformers since 1995. We offer compact split core CTs with customizable current ratings, output signals, cable lengths and connectors for EV charging equipment manufacturers.

1. Why Do EV Chargers Need Current Transformers?

In smart EV charging systems, CT clamps can help monitor the electrical load of a home or commercial building.

The current measurement can be used by a compatible controller to:

  • Support dynamic load balancing

  • Monitor household or building electricity consumption

  • Support solar surplus charging

  • Help prevent electrical supply overload

  • Provide current data for energy management systems

The CT provides the current measurement signal, while the EV charger or its controller processes the data and adjusts charging accordingly.

2. Choosing the Right CT Current Rating

The correct CT rating depends on the electrical installation, maximum expected current and charger controller requirements.

For example:

Current Measurement Requirement

Suggested CT Series

Window Size

1A–80A

XH-SCT-T10

10mm

1A -100A

XH-SCT-T16

16mm

1A–300A

XH-SCT-T24

24mm

1A–600A

XH-SCT-T36

36mm

1A–1000A

XH-SCT-T50

50mm

These are general selection guidelines. The final current rating should be matched to the electrical system and measurement requirements.

3. Selecting the Correct CT Output

EV charging manufacturers use different current sensing interfaces.

Common CT output options include:

333mV Output

Suitable for controllers and energy monitoring devices designed for 333mV voltage-output CTs.

mA Output

Current-output CTs such as 100A/100mA,100A/50mA, 100A/40mA ,100A/33.33mA ,100A/20mA, or customized ratios can be supplied according to the controller input requirements.

1A or 5A Output

These are commonly used with compatible energy meters and industrial power monitoring equipment.

The CT output must match the input specification of the EV charger controller or metering device.

4. Choosing the Correct Window Size

The CT window must be large enough to fit around the insulated conductor.

For compact EV charging installations, smaller CTs such as the XH-SCT-T10 or XH-SCT-T16 can be useful when installation space is limited.

Larger split core CTs are available for thicker cables and higher-current applications.

5. Single-Phase and Three-Phase EV Charging

Single-phase EV charging installations commonly use one CT to monitor the relevant supply conductor.

Three-phase installations may require three CTs to monitor L1, L2 and L3 individually.

Some applications may also require neutral current monitoring. The number of CTs depends on the system design and controller requirements.

6. Can a Current Transformer Connect Directly to RS485?

A conventional split core CT normally provides an analog current or voltage signal, not an RS485 digital communication output.

For systems requiring RS485 communication, the CT can be connected to a compatible energy meter or current measurement module supporting RS485/Modbus RTU.

The meter or module then transmits the measurement data to the EV charging controller or gateway.

7. Customized CT Solutions for EV Charger Manufacturers

Jiangyin Spark supports OEM current transformer customization, including:

  • Primary current ratings and transformation ratios

  • mA and voltage output options

  • Window sizes and housing dimensions

  • Cable lengths and connector types

  • Accuracy requirements subject to model specifications

  • Sample development and batch production

Our split core current transformers are suitable for evaluation in EV charging, energy monitoring and smart power management projects.
