How to Choose a Rogowski Coil for 1000A AC Current Measurement

Measuring 1000A AC current can be challenging when large cables or busbars are already installed. A flexible Rogowski coil provides a convenient solution because it can be installed around the conductor without disconnecting the cable.

However, selecting the right 1000A Rogowski coil requires more than simply matching the current rating. Output signal, coil size, frequency, accuracy and the connected meter or monitoring device should all be considered.

1. Confirm the Current Measurement Range

The first step is to determine the actual current range of your application.

For a system with a nominal current around 1000A AC, choose a Rogowski coil that can accurately cover the expected operating current and possible current peaks.

Typical applications include:

  • Energy monitoring systems

  • Power meters and submeters

  • Solar and renewable energy systems

  • EV charging equipment

  • Industrial power monitoring

  • Building energy management systems

2. Choose the Correct Output Signal

The output of the Rogowski coil must be compatible with the meter, power analyzer, energy monitoring device or other equipment receiving the signal.

Common output options may include:

  • 333mV

For example, a 1000A/100mV Rogowski coil provides a 100mV output at the specified 1000A rated current and frequency.

Before ordering, always check the required input specification of your measuring device.

3. Check the Operating Frequency

Frequency is another important factor when selecting a Rogowski coil.

For standard AC power measurement, the sensor should be suitable for the frequency of the electrical system.

The RSCT-1000A/100mV is designed for 50Hz applications, with an operating frequency range of 45–65Hz, making it suitable for common power monitoring applications.

4. Select the Right Coil Size

One major advantage of a flexible Rogowski coil is that it can be installed around large conductors and busbars.

Before selecting the coil size, measure the conductor or busbar installation space.

The coil should be large enough for easy installation while avoiding unnecessary excess length.

For OEM projects, coil diameter and cable length can be customized according to the installation requirements.

5. Consider Accuracy and Response

For energy monitoring and power measurement, sensor performance should also be considered.

Important parameters include:

  • Linearity

  • Response time

  • Electrical isolation

  • Stability

  • Measurement range

For the RSCT series, configurations are available with linearity ≤1% FS, response time ≤0.01ms, and 10kV AC / 1min galvanic isolation.

6. Consider Installation Requirements

Rogowski coils are particularly useful for retrofit projects because their flexible structure allows them to be installed around existing cables or busbars.

This makes them suitable where conventional rigid current transformers may be difficult to install.

When selecting a sensor, consider:

  • Conductor or busbar dimensions

  • Available installation space

  • Coil diameter

  • Cable length

  • Connector type

  • Output requirements

7. Standard or Customized Rogowski Coil?

Many applications cannot use exactly the same sensor specification.

For OEM projects, the following parameters can be customized:

  • Rated current

  • Output signal

  • Coil diameter

  • Cable length

  • Connector or terminal

  • Electrical specifications

For example, if your equipment requires 1000A input with 100mV output at 50Hz, the RSCT-1000A/100mV can be configured for the application.
