Rogowski Coil vs Split Core Current Transformer: Which Is Better for Current Measurement?

Publish Time: 2026-08-14     Origin: Site

Choosing between a Rogowski coil and a split core current transformer (CT) is not simply a question of which sensor is better.

The right choice depends on the current range, conductor size, required output, installation space and the device receiving the signal.

For many standard AC energy monitoring applications, a split core CT is simple and practical. For high-current measurement, large busbars or installations where space is limited, a flexible Rogowski coil may be the better solution.

The most important difference is therefore not simply accuracy. It is how the sensor behaves at different current levels and how easily it can be integrated into the complete measurement system. Rogowski coils are air-core sensors and require integration of their raw signal, while conventional CTs use a magnetic core.

When Should You Choose a Split Core Current Transformer?

A split core CT is often a good choice when the current range is clearly defined and the application is mainly standard 50/60Hz AC measurement.

For example, if an energy meter needs to measure 100A AC and accepts a 333mV input, a 100A/333mV split core CT can provide a straightforward solution.

Typical applications include:

  • Energy meters and submeters

  • Building energy management

  • Solar energy monitoring

  • EV charging equipment

  • Industrial power monitoring

Split core CTs are also convenient for retrofit projects because the core can be opened and installed around an existing conductor without removing the cable.

However, the window size must fit the conductor, and correct core closure is important for measurement performance.

When Should You Choose a Rogowski Coil?

A Rogowski coil becomes particularly useful when current and conductor size increase.

Consider a 1000A busbar inside an electrical distribution cabinet. A conventional split core CT large enough to fit the busbar may become bulky.

A flexible Rogowski coil can simply be opened, wrapped around the busbar and closed.

Because it uses an air core rather than a magnetic core, it does not experience magnetic-core saturation. This also gives it a wide usable current range and makes it attractive for high-current and transient measurement.

Typical applications include:

  • 1000A and higher AC current measurement

  • Large cables and busbars

  • Main distribution panels

  • Power quality monitoring

  • Industrial energy monitoring

  • High-current equipment

  • Retrofit installations with limited space

A Practical Example: 100A vs 1000A

Here is a simple way to understand the difference.

Application A: 100A feeder

The conductor is relatively small, the meter accepts 333mV, and the main requirement is standard energy monitoring.

A 100A/333mV split core CT is likely the simpler choice.

Application B: 1000A busbar

The conductor is much larger, installation space is limited, and the monitoring system needs a voltage signal.

A 1000A Rogowski coil, such as a 100mV or other integrated-output version matched to the meter, may be more convenient.

This is why selecting a current sensor only according to the rated amperage is not enough.

5 Questions to Ask Before Choosing

Before selecting either technology, check these five parameters:

1. What is the current range?
Define both the normal operating current and the maximum expected AC current.

2. What is the conductor size?
For a split core CT, check the window dimensions. For a Rogowski coil, check the required loop length or diameter.

3. What output does your meter require?
Common systems may require 333mV, 100mV, 1V, 5A, 1A or another signal.

4. What accuracy does the complete system require?
Do not compare sensor accuracy alone. Meter input, signal conditioning, installation and operating range can all affect the final measurement.

5. Is installation space limited?
For large busbars or crowded cabinets, mechanical installation can become the deciding factor.

So, Which One Is Better?

There is no universal winner.

Choose a split core current transformer when you want a simple solution for a defined AC current range and straightforward integration with an energy meter or monitoring device.

Choose a Rogowski coil when you need to measure higher currents, accommodate large or irregular conductors, avoid magnetic-core saturation, or install the sensor in a space where a large conventional CT would be difficult to use.

The better question is therefore not:

“Which current sensor is better?”

It is:

“Which current sensor fits my current range, conductor and meter input better?”
