How to Choose a Rogowski Coil with 5A Output for Power Meters

For power meters and measuring instruments designed for a standard 5A current input, a Rogowski coil with 5A output provides a flexible solution for measuring high AC currents.

Compared with conventional large current transformers, a flexible Rogowski coil is easier to install around existing cables and busbars, especially in retrofit projects or applications with limited installation space.

But how do you choose the correct Rogowski coil with 5A output?

1. Match the Primary Current Range

The first step is to determine the maximum AC current that needs to be measured.

Common current ratios include:

Primary Current

Output

1000A

5A AC

2000A

5A AC

3000A

5A AC

Other ranges

Customized

For example, if the maximum operating current is around 1000A and the power meter accepts a 5A input, a 1000A/5A Rogowski coil can be selected.

For higher-current applications, 2000A/5A or 3000A/5A Rogowski coils may be more suitable.

2. Check the Power Meter Input

Before selecting the Rogowski coil, check the current input specification of the power meter.

If the meter is designed for a conventional 1A or 5A CT input, the Rogowski coil system must provide a compatible current output.

A Rogowski coil with 5A AC output allows high-current measurements to be connected to many existing 5A-input meters and monitoring instruments.

3. Choose the Correct Coil Size

One major advantage of a flexible Rogowski coil is that the coil diameter can be selected according to the conductor or busbar size.

The coil should be large enough to install easily around the conductor while avoiding unnecessary excess length.

For special busbars, large cables or retrofit installations, custom coil diameters are often the better choice.

4. Consider Accuracy and Frequency

For power monitoring applications, accuracy and operating frequency should also be checked.

Typical parameters to consider include:

  • Measurement accuracy

  • Phase error

  • Linearity

  • Operating frequency

  • Measurement range

  • Operating temperature

For 50Hz or 60Hz power systems, the complete Rogowski coil and output circuit should be selected according to the required metering accuracy.

5. Consider Installation Requirements

Before ordering, confirm:

  • Primary current range

  • Required 5A AC output

  • Cable or busbar dimensions

  • Rogowski coil diameter

  • Lead length

  • Power meter specifications

Providing these details helps the manufacturer select or customize the correct Rogowski coil.
